Wonderful Places in Iran to Visit
Here we will introduce you to some of the wonderful places in Iran to visit.
The country has 21 UNESCO world heritage sites and an infinite number of natural beauties which made it difficult for us to choose a few for this page.
Here are our suggestions:
The world mostly knows Iran by Persepolis and Pasargadae, both are UNESCO world heritages. Persepolis was built by Darius I the king of kings as the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire in 518 B.C. The gorgeous reliefs and impressive gateways and columns will give you a sense of how grand this empire was. Persepolis originally named Parsa has located 62km from Shiraz.
Pasargadae city was established by Cyrus the Great and then became his resting place. Pasargadae, a UNESCO heritage site, was the capital of an empire with a great multicultural nation in the world. The lonely mausoleum of Cyrus is sitting on top of six stone tiers in the Morghab plain 50 km north of Persepolis.
Our next suggestion is one of the most attractive cities in Iran, Isfahan. Isfahan was the capital during Safavid Dynasty, so the entire city has magnificent architecture. The masterpiece of Isfahan is Naghshe Jahan Square (Imam Square). It is a UNESCO world heritage and is the world’s second-largest square. The dome of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in the square changes colors from pink cream at the dawn to turquoise toward the sunset.
Do you know where the hottest place on Earth is? Let me save you a search on the web, it is the Lut Desert in Iran. Lut is famous for its Kaluts as well. Kaluts are tall structures made up of sand that have been shaped throughout long centuries because of erosion. These structures make a picturesque and mysterious view of the desert.
There is a city in central Iran that is known as the magnificent oasis of the desert. The beautiful Yazd with its adobe houses is a forest of wind towers. Wind towers capture the wind and direct it into the building for natural ventilation. The wind towers keep the houses cool on the hottest days of the year.
There is a mosque in the suburbs of Nishabur city that is greatly unique not only in Iran but also in the world because it is completely made of wood. Even though this mosque is built of wood only, it resists earthquakes up to 8 Richter. The trays used in this mosque and faucets are made of wood as well. The woods have been processed to resist termites and decay.
One of the oldest churches in the world is located in the Jolfa region close to Tabriz in North West of Iran. The Armenian Monastic Ensembles consist of St Thaddeus and St Stepanos and the Chapel of Dzordzo dates back to the seventh century. This UNESCO world heritage is very valuable in terms of Armenian architecture and decorations.
Chogha Zanbil, the oldest existing Ziggurat in the world, is in the Khuzestan province of Iran. This steppe temple is a UNESCO world heritage and dates back to 3300 years ago. Chogha Zanbil was destroyed in 640 BC and was covered by sand until 1935.
And last but not least is the Azadi Tower of Tehran. It is a 50-m tall tower with an iwan-style arc that is one of the important landmarks of the city. The structure has an inverted Y-shape and was built on the 2500th anniversary of the first Persian Empire.
