Listed UNESCO Urmia, Host of the World Volleyball League 2019
Urmia, the capital of West Azerbaijan province on the northwest of Iran, hosted the third week of the World Volleyball League 2019 from 14th to 16th of June. The players from Iran, Canada, Poland, and Russia competed for the top rank in 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League in the “Ghadir” sports hall, one of the most equipped volleyball courts in Iran. This gives an opportunity to the tourists who are interested in sports to kill two birds with one stone.
Uramia, meaning the city of water in the Assyrian language, enjoys natural and historical attractions, exquisite gastronomy, and friendly people. Moreover, it is one of the best choices and the coolest places to travel in the late spring and the whole summer. Lake Urmia, a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and a National Park under the 1971 Ramsar Convention, Takht-e Soleyman and St. Thaddeus Monastery- both as the UNESCO Heritage Sites– add to the sports lovers’ experience of visiting Urmia.
Sports tourism has become one of the fastest growing sectors in tourism. A major sporting event is a powerful tourist attraction in itself. When it is combined with other natural or cultural attractions, it will provide a memorable experience of the destination for the tourists. It will improve the destination image, develop the infrastructure, and brings social and economic benefits for the local community as well. 2019 World Volleyball League is a precious opportunity for Iran to grow its branding awareness and to improve its image in international media.
