Omidvar Brothers: Story, Museum, Book, Photos & more

Imagine traveling the world on merely a bike and 90$ to spend. Only a brave soul could embark on a 10-year journey across the globe. Believe it or not, that is what the Omidvar brothers did back in 1954. Throwing their film-making gear on their bikes, they hit the road to see the most outlying people they could encounter. An extraordinary documentary of a vanished world was made of these people, cultures, and even countries that no longer exist.

Abdollah and Issa Omidvar, born after the Second World War, lived in the suburbs of Tehran. They have always had a taste for traveling and probing, inspired by the stories their father used to tell on the long nights of the winter. Their dream was to visit all the hidden corners of the world. In Iran, they were part of a mountaineering club with which they climbed Mount Damavand, the highest volcano in Asia. The Omidvars were not seasoned travelers, professional filmmakers, or elite members. They were two men in their early 20s who wanted to learn more about the world.

Why Traveling with Bike?

Issa participated in a speed and endurance race that ranged from Karaj to Tehran and won second place. Sometime later, he finished fourth among all the participants in a speed cycling race. Another reason that caused more motivation to travel by bicycle was the French cyclist Lionel Brans, who planned to go from Paris to Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, on a bike. He was passing through Tehran on the way and was welcomed by the mountaineers of the club. This meeting and acquaintance made Issa’s determination to travel by bicycle more.

Preparing for adventure

Issa decided to go on a motorbike trip to the west. He crossed the border of Iran to travel to Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. This four-month journey was exhausting with graveled and dangerous roads. Yet, he was welcomed by the people and finished his 4-month adventure. Meanwhile, his brother Abdollah was exploring southern Iran by bicycle with his friend. The Omidvars’ determination and gentle approach – outlined in their motto attached to their bikes, “All different, all relative” – was the perfect motive for their journey.

Start of an Endless Journey

The first journey of the Omidvar brothers took seven years, passing through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India and traveling to Tibet, Southeast Asia, and Australia. After crossing the Pacific Ocean, they traveled to Alaska, North America, and South America. Finally, they arrived in Europe after crossing the Atlantic Ocean. After a brief trip home, a new round of adventure in a 2CV begins. They drove through Africa, managing to get the vehicle through the Congo and the challenging barrier of the Ituri forest.

During their trips to different parts of the world, the Omidvar brothers filmed their observations. They launched the documentary they made on various networks around the world. This documentary includes the life and adventures of these two brothers. They had to hang around the Africans, live alongside primitive and dangerous Amazonian tribes, and eat raw animal meat with the Eskimos. And when you ask them about the hardships of their journey, they say: travel makes a person resistant, and the more a person deals with problems, the more resistant he becomes.

When their journey ended, Abdollah settled in Chile, founding a successful film company, and Issa returned to Iran as a celebrity. Then, in Tehran, in an 18th-century Pahlavi palace, he constructed a museum to house all the artifacts he and his brother had collected. The Naderi collection consists of three main sections. In the middle of the building is a pastry that has been closed for several years. Naderi Café and Restaurant also consist of two separate halls that are adjacent to each other; and have a total capacity of 140 people. The first hall is for cafes and the second hall is served as a restaurant.
This cafe has beautiful decorations. As you sit in that 100-year-old polished chair and wait for your coffee to arrive, you can browse through the memories of framed photos on the wall and its old cups. Today the café is run by Khachik Madikian’s grandchildren. Also, all waiters are 40- to 50-year-old Armenian men. It is interesting to know that the oldest waiter in the Cafe is called “Eshghi” who always has a soda opener in his pocket, and whenever you want to open your soda, he is at your service! This mansion was the palace of a prince who was not destined to become king. Massoud Mirza was the son of Nasser al-Din Shah, who took the title of Zel-o-Sultan from his father and became the ruler of Isfahan. What do you know about the first Iranian historical monument registered in UNESCO? Iran is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, governed by many rulers and kingdoms. Today we can see historic constructions and religious temples from different periods in Iran. Religious buildings have always been a great attraction to tourists. Here, we are going to introduce a Ziggurat named Chogha Zanbil which is a glorious monument of the past.

Location and History

Chogha Znabil Ziggurat is located in Susa city, Khuzestan province, which is 115 km away from Ahvaz. Historically, the construction of this building dates back to 1250 BC. After entering the city, you can follow the signs along the way to reach the Ziggurat of ChoghaZanbil and visit it. But, what are the Ziggurats? Ziggurats were respected and sacred buildings to people of that time, and they prepared the best materials, including bricks and clay, to build such structures.
How old is Chogha Zanbil? A glance into its history indicates that it was built during the Ontash Napirash, the king of the Elamites. The discovery of the construction is also an interesting story. At that time, a geologist named Jacques Demorgan began drilling for oil around Susa, but after a while, he found the ancient bricks and sent them to archaeologists. Years later, archaeological excavations led to the discovery of Choghaznabil.

Architecture

As we mentioned, Chogha Zanbil was once buried under the ground. That is why we observe it in the form of a hill. In the structure of the Chogha Zanbil, a pyramidal and stepped architecture is evident; It is made of several floors and has dozens of nested corridors and rooms. The area around the building is paved to give an excellent view. You can see circular platforms in the northeastern, northwestern, and southwestern parts of this building. There are sundials built to detect time and seasons. The interior of the building is made of clay, and the exterior wall is made of brick. Bricks are used to protect the clay from erosion. They are all baked, and inscriptions are written on them. This place has three zones marked by fences, and visitors can enter the first one.

One of the wonders of Chogha Znabil is the water supply system in this ancient temple. The waterways have been developed along the entire building to protect it from the torrential rains of Khuzestan. Also, the four corners of the Ziggurat are in the direction of the four geographical directions, and this shows that the builders knew the north, south, east, and west well.

There are stories and secrets behind every historical and religious place. It would be a good idea to read the mysteries about the Chogha Zanbil. The people of ancient Elam believed that Ziggurats were a bridge that took men to heaven and brought them closer to the gods step by step. On the other hand, some supposed that gods came to the Earth from heaven with the help of the Ziggurats. That is why the building has stepped architecture.
In ancient times, people believed in several gods. The people of ancient Elam accepted that many gods controlled and ruled the world and that every city had a god who was in charge of protecting it. People built temples for the gods in the city center. But inside the Ziggurat of Choghazanbil, statues of the Inshushinak and Napirisha gods were kept. During the festivities, many gifts were given to the gods by the people.
There are more interesting facts about this ziggurat. As we said, the ground around the ziggurat has been paved. Archaeologists have found traces of a child’s foot on some parts of the paving, the cause of which is still unknown. It is scary and exciting at the same time! Evidence suggests that the Choghaznabil ziggurat was seized and destroyed by Assyrian Banipal before it was completed. He stated in an inscription:” I broke the ziggurat of Susa, which was glazed with azure bricks. I razed the temples of Elam to dust. I turned Susa into a ruin. The human voice and joy were destroyed by me.”

Masouleh is famous for the spectacular architecture that its village owns on one of the steep hillsides. The yard of the houses above is the roof of the houses below. This fact makes this village unusual in a way but pleasing to look at as well. Every single house has colorful flowerpots on its balcony that spread a great vibe to the environment besides giving the village a beautiful look. Among the houses, you can find shops, restaurants, and cafes in which you can take a break, and try some Persian tea or local foods. The locals are very kind and generous. 3. Rudkhan Castle

Wear your sports shoes and get yourself ready because there’s a long way to reach your destination. Rudkhan Castle has more than a thousand steps that you need to climb so you could reach the top of the castle. But when you do, you will be fascinated by the breathtaking view. It’s worth visiting Rudkhan Castle, especially on a beautiful spring day, the trees are a delight to walk through. You will need 4 hours to visit the whole castle. And at the foot of the castle, you can find plenty of places where you can eat and refresh yourself.

1. Khalid Nabi Cemetery

The Khalid Nabi Cemetery is believed to be the most mysterious cemetery in Iran and is well-known for its strange-looking grave. Not only the cemetery, and the surrounding landscape, but the scenery on the way is also breathtaking. When you take a look at all the surroundings, you might think you walked into a place that seems to be far away from this planet. It is beautiful here in all seasons, but visiting in spring gives you an unforgettable memory.

2. Qabus Dome

You can find one of the tallest brick towers in the World in Golestan Province. Gonbad-e Qabus is an ancient monument that is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. This tower used to act as a sign for people passing through the silk road so they could use it to find the right way. There is a spot outside the tower marked by a white stone that makes a strange echo to everything you say. Local traditional foods and costumes can be found around the tower as well, which will be a pleasing experience.

3. Alangdarreh

If you’re looking for a place to relax and ease your mind while cycling in between pathways of trees, then you can consider Alangdarreh a choice. You can have a pleasant picnic with your family and friends and enjoy the cool weather around you. There are barbecue accessories around in which you can cook yourself tasty food. You can hear the water flow sounds from a nearby river that is so pleasing and relaxing and calms you down in an instant. Take your time and lie down in this mesmerizing place and enjoy.
